MAY 20 - Season Opener

It was a very wet evening at Sunnybrook Park when the Felines opened their season against the Wanderers. While the pitch wasn’t in the best of conditions, both teams were ready to go. The rain kindly stopped just in time for the opening kick off.

From the start it was obvious the game was going to be hard hitting with plenty of scrums. The pack had a few problems in the first couple of scrums, before figuring out how to deal with a very large opposite front row. However after allowing ourselves to be wheeled a couple of times, we sorted things out and from then on the scrums were well fought with neither team giving an inch.

The Wanderers got on the scoreboard first with an early try, after their fullback “slipped” through a tackle and beat us on the outside. The rest of the first half was hard fought with the Felines showing some excellent defenCe.

At the half the Felines regrouped and came out hard in the 2nd half determined to score.
Louise, Jen, Genevieve and Shereen were all over the field, throwing their bodies at every ruck and maul. Many times winning the ball or at least making sure the Wanderers had to fight hard to make any ground. However as everything was so wet, we were having trouble hanging on to the ball, which made it difficult to make a lot of headway.

We put up a valiant effort but unfortunately didn’t manage to break the Wanderers shut out and when the final whistle blew it was Wanderers 25 Lions 0.

Both teams enjoyed some food and beverages back at Dirty Nelly’s afterwards.

Great effort ladies !!!!

APRIL 26 - Felines vs. Waterpark RFC

On Sat April 26th as part of Frank Calimino Day, the Felines took on Waterpark RFC Ladies, a touring side from Ireland. After a presentation in memory of Frank to Isabelle Calimino in her daughters, the game began. It was the first game of the season for the Lions ladies, but the off-season rustiness quickly wore off. After a slow start in which the tourists capitalized with two tries the game started to get into a flow and the Felines got moving. Unfortunately the game was cut short due to an injury to Maria Goff of the tourists, and the final score ended 19-0 for Waterpark. A good game by both sides, with the Felines showing lots of talent and promise for the season ahead. Afterward there was a beer up at Dirty Nelly’s for all the Lions, the Waterpark ladies and the Bucs, the men’s opposition that day. Then a very successful pub-crawl in the neighbourhood capped a great day to kick off the Lions season.

Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed themselves on the day, especially Waterpark, who were a great team to host. Maria you’re a trouper, hope the arm is healing quickly.

On the Lions,
Alison
