2011 Yeomen Lions Season Recap
The 2011 season proved to be a highly successful year for the Yeomen Lions under first-year Head Coach, Kurt Magney and Assistant Coach, Lauren Williams. The team finished 3rd in the Ontario Women's League (OWL) with a 5-5 record.
With a highly dedicated coaching staff, a pool of talented players and a couple Welsh imports, the Yeomen Lions rallied together to battle with some of the league's top teams. What started off as a wet and uninspiring season, quickly turned into the most successful season the team has seen in recent years. Fine-tuned practices allowed the women to work on the fundamentals of the sport while sharpening the skills of each player. Game strategy introduced by our coaching staff forced the women to work together in different scenarios for better team cohesion.
The result would be two colossal wins against two highly rivalled teams. The first win came at the despair of the Markham Irish in a tightly contested match, edged by the Yeomen Lions by a score of 15-12. Riding on the heels of greatness, the team picked up further momentum when they triumphed over the highly favoured Toronto Scottish with a convincing score of 33-17. The Yeomen Lions would serve the Toronto Scottish their only loss of the season before being crowned OWL Champions over the Aurora Barbarians.
Now with the 2011 season behind them, the Yeomen Lions will build on the successes of the year and hope to become a strong contender for the OWL cup in the 2012 season.
Pink Ladies Day A Success
On July 9th, the yeomen lions participated in the annual pink ladies day fundraiser with the Toronto Buccaneers, to raise money for breast cancer research. We showed great spirit in our home games vs. the Brampton Beavers, winning both games. Proceeds from our BBQ went to support the cause, as did raffle ticket purchases. The evening included a social event at our sposor bar The Fox and The Fiddle, and a great time was had by all while supporting a worthy cause. We are looking forward to participating again next year.
